FAYETTEVILLE — After a rough first inning, Tyler Nelson was able to settle down and Nate Rutherford pitched four innings of no-hit ball to lead Bryant past Rogers Heritage 4-2 Friday in the Class 7A baseball championship game at Baum Stadium.
Heritage (22-9) got rolling with one out on Arkansas recruit Blake Baxendale’s double with one out. Pitcher Hunter Wood drove in Baxendale and later came around for the 2-0 lead.
But Bryant (25-7) tied the game with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to make it an even ballgame again. Rutherford came in in the fourth inning and faced just 11 batters as he struck out four and walked just one batter on 48 pitches.
Bryant broke the tie with a run in the bottom of the second and scored an insurance run in the fifth inning.
Josh Pultro was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and one run scored and Nelson added an RBI and one run with his three innings of pitching. Trevor Ezell scored two runs.
Wood finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run.
Genoa Central 11,
FAYETTEVILLE — Genoa Central pounded out 11 runs on just eight hits and benefited from five Smackover (24-11) errors in an 11-1, six-inning win on Friday for the Class 3A title.
Blake Sullivan went all five innings for Genoa Central (31-1) as he gave up one run on four hits, walked three and struck out six. Jacob Kirkland and Sullivan drove in two runs each and Cole Beckham and Nick Purifoy each drove in a run.
