Monticello suffers soccer setback
ARKAELPHIA — Monticello suffered a 4-0 loss to Arkadelphia on Wednesday. Monticello returns to action Friday at 5:30 p.m., hosting Sylvan Hills in a key 5A-Southeast tilt. The winner will earn the No. 2 seed entering the playoffs while the loser will be the third seed.
Means reaches quarterfinals in Vegas
LAS VEGAS — Quincy Means won his first two bouts at the National Golden Gloves competition in Las Vegas. Means opened the event with a three-round win over Cincinnati’s Jayvon Garrett with a dominating third round and reached the quarterfinals with another three-rounder over Detroit’s Ahmed Mahnood.
Means will continue his quest for a national title today.
Griffin suffers loss in national bout
LAS VEGAS — Donald Griffin won his first bout in Las Vegas on Tuesday against Quentin Leavell but suffered a loss to New York’s Patrick Day Wednesday evening to end his title hopes before reaching the quarterfinals of the National Golden Gloves competition.
Softball team closes season with no-no
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The University of Arkansas softball team closed out its 2012 non-conference regular season with a 4-0 no-hitter victory over Missouri State. The Razorbacks improve to 26-24 on the season heading into its last series this weekend at Georgia.
Arkansas retired 11 straight batters behind stellar defense and the pitching of Chelsea Cohen. Cohen and Beasley combined, recorded the no hitter for the Razorbacks, the first in many years for the program.
Arkansas to play LSU in Fayetteville
FAYETTEVILLE — The University of Arkansas football team will end its 2012 regular season on Friday, Nov. 23, against LSU in a game televised nationally on CBS, it was announced Wednesday.
The Razorbacks and Tigers are set to square off in the annual Battle for the Boot on the Friday after Thanksgiving for the second year in a row and the 15th time in the last 17 years. Arkansas has won three of the last five meetings between the two teams, including two straight at home.
The LSU game is the final of eight in-state contests on the 2012 schedule and will be played in Fayetteville for the first time since 1992.
Seau found dead in California home
OCEANSIDE, Calif. — Former NFL linebacker Junior Seau was found dead in his California home Wednesday. Seau’s girlfriend found the body after returning home from the gym, a gunshot wound to the chest, a revolver near his body but no note.
He was 43.
Weaver throws no-no
ANAHEIM — Los Angeles Angels pitcher Jered Weaver threw a no-hitter against Minnesota on Wednesday. Weaver struck out nine batters and walked just one as the Angels won 9-0.
NFL slams Saints with suspensions
Linebacker Jonathan Vilma receives a full-season suspension, linemen Anthony Hargrove and Will Smith get eight and four games, respectively, and linebacker Scott Fujita gets three games for their roles in a bounty program on opposing players.
Hargrove now plays for Green Bay and Fujita for Cleveland.
