FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas’ starting quarterback stood on the sideline with his right arm in a black sling, protecting his injured shoulder.
Arkansas’ bend-but-don’t-break defense and grind-it-out run game made sure sophomore Brandon Allen’s absence didn’t result in a loss on the field, too.
FAYETEVILLE — Late in the first quarter, Arkansas quarterback Brandon Allen was flushed from the pocket on third-and-goal from the Southern Miss 5-yard line. He scrambled and dove into the end zone for the Razorbacks’ first points in a 24-3 win.
But it was the last play of the day for the sophomore.
Smith Sack Leader
Senior defensive end Chris Smith sacked Southern Miss quarterback Allan Bridgford three times Saturday on his way to tying for seventh place with Jamaal Anderson on the Arkansas career sacks list with 17 1/2. Wayne Martin, who played in 1985-88, holds the Arkansas record with 25 1/2. One additional sack will put Smith ahead of Scott Long (1989-92) and at number six on the career list.
