Astin Steps Into Friday Night Role For South Carolina Series

Errors Prove Costly In 13-Inning Loss To Rebels

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas made several big plays on defense, including Matt Vinson’s diving catch in left field in extra innings.

They got some timely hits like the two-out, two-run single by designated hitter Joe Serrano to take the lead against Ole Miss. They even got some solid pitching from relievers Jalen Beeks and Brandon Moore against the Rebels’ strong lineup.

Fant Helps Arkansas Even Series With Ole Miss

FAYETTEVILLE — In years past, Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn would not have hesitated to remove starter Randall Fant from a game in the fifth inning with trouble brewing.

In Saturday’s Southeastern Conference game against No. 6 Ole Miss, Van Horn stuck with Fant and the senior southpaw rewarded his coach’s confidence with a strong six-inning performance in the No. 15 Hogs’ 10-1 victory at Baum Stadium.

Aside From Parking Ticket, Bielema Has No Complaints At Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE — Parking has been an issue for nearly anyone at the University of Arkansas and Bret Bielema is no exception.

The Razorbacks head coach addressed the media Friday before the school’s Pro Day and revealed he has received his first parking citation. But it was his only complaint after a few months on the job.

The junior has seen too many disappointing performances in the Southeastern Conference Tournament during his career with the Razorbacks. He really thought this time was different. He really believed a roster with more depth and talent in Mike Anderson’s second season would finally break through.

Arkansas Walks Its Way To Easy Win

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas drew a school-record 19 walks and scored a season-high in runs to beat Alabama A&M 20-2 Tuesday at Baum Stadium.

The Razorbacks initially took the lead in the fourth inning when freshman Isaac Hellbusch put the Razorbacks ahead with a two-run home run. He came through later in the inning with a two-run single to total four RBIs in the fourth. Tyler Spoon had an RBI walk and Brian Anderson added a two-run single in Arkansas’ seven-run inning.

SEC Tournament: Arkansas’ First-Round Opponent A ‘Dangerous Team’

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas hasn’t won a Southeastern Conference Tournament game since 2008, stumbling in their first attempt in each of the past four years.

The only way to break the streak on Thursday is by beating a Vanderbilt team with wins in four of its final five games and serves as the unofficial SEC Tournament host in Nashville, Tenn. So Arkansas coach Mike Anderson believes the seventh-seeded Razorbacks face a “great task” in trying to end the skid against the No. 10 seed.
