Weekend tourney draws big field

Thanksgiving is fast approaching, and in youth football that means the Pre-Gobble Day Classic is returning to Pine Bluff.

On Saturday and Sunday, 34 youth football teams from Arkansas, Texas, Missouri, Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana will compete in the second annual tournament, which benefits Neighbor to Neighbor through a canned good drive. Games will be played at Pine Bluff, Dollarway and Watson Chapel high schools and Southeast Middle School on Saturday starting at 8 a.m., with the championship games to be held starting at 11 a.m. Sunday at Golden Lion Stadium.

Tournament organizer Cory Blunt said the Pre-Gobble Day Classic helps young athletes to stay motivated to do well in academics and athletics and allows players to experience the fun of traveling to compete in football.

Age divisions range from 6-under to 12-under. The champions in each division will receive rings.

Some of the teams in this year’s Classic are coming from as far as Denton, Texas; Lake Providence and Bastrop, La.; and Kansas City, Mo.

Regular admission is $6 for adults and $4 for kids. Patrons will receive a discount for bringing a canned good to the game.
