WARREN — Warren scored a late touchdown and then stopped Malvern on a fourth-down play at the Lumberjacks’ 11-yard line in the final minute to preserve a 32-28 Class 3A state playoff win here Friday night.
Trailing 28-25, Warren (9-3) registered its winning touchdown on a 47-yard screen pass from Drake Jones to Kylie Cox. Fernando Sadnero connected on a conversion kick.
Malvern responded by putting together its last-ditch drive, but Warren’s Dey’Shawn McCrae sent the Leopards home by delivering the decisive tackle. The Lumberjacks took a knee to run out the clock and advance to a quarterfinal game at Stuttgart next week.
Warren led 12-0 after the first quarter after Cox ran for a touchdown and Jones laced a 42-yard touchdown pass to Lasoy Smith.
After Malvern trimmed the Lumberjacks’ lead to 12-7 early in the second period, Jones threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Von Eric Gonder to give Warren an 18-7 topping. Malvern cut the score to 18-14 before intermission.
The Leopards moved ahead by 21-18 early in the third period, but Jones quickly scored a touchdown on a 5-yard run to lift Warren to a 25-21 lead.
Malvern regained the lead at 28-25 in the fourth round, setting up Warren’s game-winning heroics.
