UAPB to host 5K run/walk in Sept.

A 5-kilometer run/walk event that focuses on fitness and raises money for the Arkansas-Pine Bluff athletic scholarship fund is scheduled for Sept. 21.

The Golden Lion 5K Run/Walk for Fitness will be held on the morning of UAPB’s home football game against Alcorn State. The 3.2-mile run/walk will start at Golden Lion Stadium at 8 a.m., wind through streets in the city and finish back at the stadium.

The Mid-South Fitness Association, headed by event organizer Larry Westmoreland, and the UAPB Strength and Conditioning Center will provide free fitness lectures and sessions for the community leading up to the run/walk.

UAPB athletic director Lonza Hardy Jr. said in a news release the run/walk is a “a groundbreaking event that will hopefully change the community’s mindset towards getting and staying physically fit.”

“Our goal with the Golden Lion 5K Run/Walk for Fitness is to get our local community, as well as other communities throughout the state, focused on things that will help to make all of us more healthy communities, including exercise and healthy eating,” Hardy said in the release. “To accomplish this monumental task, it will have to be a collective effort. We hope that this event will bring different entities together to accomplish this, including our university, city governments throughout Arkansas and community organizations.”

Pine Bluff Mayor Debe Hollingsworth gave the event her full endorsement, according to the release.

“Keeping the body conditioned also keeps the mind conditioned,” she said in the release. “With all aspects of ourselves working together, we experience total health; body, soul and spirit. I firmly believe that a physically healthy community fosters a sense of peace and well-being. I encourage everyone to get out and get moving for their selves and for our city.”

The run/walk is aimed at citizens of all ages. The entry fee is $10 for children ages 13-17, $15 for individuals 18 and older and $25 for sanction (professional) runners. Children 12 and under can participate free.

Paying participants will receive an official event T-shirt, fruits and beverages along the course and discounted admission to the Alcorn State-UAPB football game. Kickoff for that game is 6 p.m.
