Teen faces negligent homicide charge in Hartford’s death

The 16-year-old boy who accidentally shot and killed former University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff linebacker Lydell Hartford Jr. was arrested and charged with negligent homicide.

According to a UAPB news release, citing authorities, the arrest was made on Tuesday after the teen, identified as a friend of Hartford, shot Hartford in the neck while the two of them sat in a vehicle in Hartford’s driveway in Waggaman, La.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office is not identifying the teen because he is a juvenile.

As of Wednesday afternoon, UAPB head football coach Monte Coleman said no players have come forward seeking counseling services.

“(The players) have not accepted any of the offers,” Coleman said. “With it being the offseason, really, most of the players are out of town, and of those who are here, none of the players have shown any signs of unusual grief.”

Coleman made it clear, though, that if his players need any kind of support, the resources are in place.

“Absolutely, they have a department on campus that would provide the services they would need,” Coleman said. “It’s hard to know (if any players will need help), because with training camp getting ready to start, only a few (of the players) are here right now.”
