The Pre-Gobble Day Classic was a success, organizer Cory Blunt said.
This was the second year for the big youth football tournament, which was played on high school and college fields across Pine Bluff this past weekend. The field included five local teams with 28 others from across the South.
“I got some positive feedback from the teams saying they would bring another team to the Classic next year,” Blunt said. “That lets me know they enjoyed their time here and they appreciated the hospitality.”
The DC Raiders of Denton County, Texas, placed a team in each of the three championship games that were played at Golden Lion Stadium on Saturday. (A fourth championship that was scheduled was cancelled.) The Raiders won the 9- and 10-year-old title over the Texarkana Vikings 28-6, but lost the 11- and 12-year-old final to the Kansas City (Mo.) Seminoles 14-12 and the 7- and 8-year-old final to the Memphis Golden Lions 16-8.
Blunt was appreciative of the athletic directors at Pine Bluff, Watson Chapel and Dollarway high schools and UAPB for allowing the use of the fields.
The Classic benefited Neighbor to Neighbor through a canned good drive.
