If Torii Hunter is going to reach 300 career home runs before June, tonight will be his last chance to do it.
The Detroit Tigers’ veteran right fielder from Pine Bluff will miss Friday’s and Saturday’s games at Baltimore to attend the high school graduation of his sons, Torii Jr., Monshadrik and Darius. The three are graduating from Prosper (Texas) High School, near Dallas.
MLB.com reported the departure, adding that Tigers won’t call anyone up to replace Hunter on the 25-man roster.
“This is just once in a lifetime,” Hunter told MLB.com. “I hope people forgive me for it.”
All three sons are expected to play college football. Torii Jr. is headed to Notre Dame, but he has been recovering from a broken leg sustained during practice for an All-American football game in January. Monshadrik, nicknamed ‘Money’, signed with Arkansas State earlier this month. According to multiple reports, Darius Hunter will play at Southeastern Louisiana.
Torii Hunter Sr. hit his 299th homer Sunday at home against the Minnesota Twins. He went 1 for 5 Tuesday in a 1-0, 11-inning home loss and 1 for 3 Wednesday in a 5-3 road defeat, both to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Detroit (29-22) will face Pittsburgh at 7:05 tonight.
