A-State shuts out UAPB in women’s soccer

JONESBORO — Christina Fink moved into second place all-time on Arkansas State’s career points list, helping the Red Wolves defeat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 5-0 Friday in women’s soccer.

Fink scored two goals and had an assists for A-State (4-3-2). The junior has 42 career points and is 11 away from tying the all-time record.

A-State took 42 shots, 19 of them on goal.

Panthers sweep Lady Lions

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — In the opening round of the Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Cougar Invitational, Georgia State swept UAPB 25-14, 25-11, 25-16.

Georgia State (5-7) outhit UAPB (4-14) 34-24 in kills, but the telling statistics was UAPB’s 25 errors to Georgia State’s 10.

Cornell suspends lacrosse team after hazing incident

NEW YORK — Cornell University suspended its men’s lacrosse program for the semester following an alcohol-related hazing incident, two years after the death of a sophomore led the school to ban all forms of hazing.

Cornell’s lacrosse suspensions began Sept. 13 and include its fall schedule and exhibition games. The players are allowed to practice during the ban. Last year’s intercollegiate season started in February, with the first Ivy League game in March. Cornell’s Big Red is a 26-time Ivy League champion and won three national championships in the 1970s.

Pettitte announces retirement

BRONX, N.Y. — New York Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte will retire following the 2013 season.

Pettitte previously retired in February 2011 and spent the year away from professional baseball. He returned to the Yankees in 2012.

The left-hander is 10-10 with a 3.93 ERA in 28 starts this year.

Pettitte has two more starts, including Sunday at Yankee Stadium against the San Francisco Giants. He would then make the final start of his career next weekend back home in Houston.

49ers LB Smith arrested on suspicion of DUI

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was reportedly arrested Friday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence.

According to CSNBayArea.com, which cites San Jose Police, Smith was determined to be the driver in a single-vehicle accident in San Jose’s Silver Creek district.

Smith was booked into Santa Clara County jail on charges of DUI and possession of marijuana, according to the Santa Clara Sheriff Dept. He was held on $5,250 bail, according to jail records.
