Hunter doubles in Tigers’ loss to Royals

DETROIT — Pine Bluff native Torii Hunter finished 1-for-4 with a double and a strikeout in the Detroit Tigers’ 1-0 loss to the Kansas City Royals on Saturday.

Eric Hosmer drove in the game’s only run with an RBI triple in the top of the first inning to score Alex Gordon.

UAPB finishes 1-3 in Alabama State/ISTAP Collegiate Cup

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Arkansas-Pine Bluff volleyball team finished the Alabama State/ISTAP Collegiate Cup with a 1-3 mark following a Saturday split.

UAPB beat Savannah State 25-15, 25-14, 25-23 early in the day, but fell to New Orleans 25-22, 26-24, 25-19 Saturday night.

UAPB was swept in its two Friday contests losing to Jacksonville State 25-14, 25-12 and 25-6 and to Alabama State 25-14, 29-27 and 25-18.

UAM volleyball loses final two matches of home tourney

MONTICELLO — The Arkansas-Monticello Cotton Blossoms finished the Hampton Inn Invitational with a 1-3 record after losing its final two games.

On Saturday, UAM was swept by Kentucky Wesleyan College 25-19, 25-17 and 25-15.

Against KYC, UAM (4-5) struggled from the start and posted 10 attack errors in each set in the loss. The team ended the match hitting right at zero with 30 kills and 30 errors on 106 attempts.

Junior Jessica Cuba and senior Tori Bozzo led the Blossoms with seven kills each.

In Friday night action, UAM fell to Missouri Southern in four sets 25-23, 13-25, 29-27 and 25-22.

Furyk moves 1 clear at BMW Championship

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Jim Furyk battled for a 2-under 69 on Saturday and is now one shot clear of the field after three rounds of the BMW Championship.

Coming off the sixth 59 in PGA Tour history, Furyk ended 54 holes at 13-under-par 200.

Furyk, the 2009 runner-up, will go for his 17th PGA Tour title on Sunday.

Steve Stricker rallied into contention with a 7-under 64. He jumped into second place at minus-12 at Conway Farms. Brandt Snedeker, who shared the second-round lead with Furyk, managed an even-par 71. Snedeker is alone in third at 11-under 202. Zach Johnson carded a 2-under 69 on Saturday and is by himself in fourth at minus-10.

Tiger Woods, a five-time winner of this event, birdied six of seven holes from the sixth en route to a 5-under 66. He stands alone in fifth at 9-under 204.

Jets place Sanchez on short-term IR

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets have placed quarterback Mark Sanchez on short-term injured reserve, meaning the former starter could return this season if he recovers from a shoulder problem.

Sanchez will be eligible to practice after six weeks and can return to the active roster two weeks later.
