USF blanks UAPB in soccer

TAMPA, Fla. — The Arkansas-Pine Bluff soccer team’s season got off to a rough start on Friday.

The University of South Florida blew out UAPB 7-0 at Corbett Stadium in Tampa.

UAPB failed to record a shot against the American Athletic Conference team.

Junior goalkeeper Alyssa Cobbs made seven saves in the contest.

UAPB has its home opener against Lyon College at 4 p.m. Sunday at Phumphrey Field.

Hunter comes off bench in Tigers’ win

FLUSHING, N.Y. — Pine Bluff native Torii Hunter came off the bench, but grounded out twice in the Detroit Tigers’ 3-0 win over the New York Mets on Friday.

In addition to recording his first hit since 2009, Detroit’s Max Scherzer struck out 11 batters over six scoreless innings to lift the Tigers over Matt Harvey and the Mets to pick up his 19th win of the season.

Hunter pinch-hit for Andy Dirks in the seventh inning. The All-Star outfielder grounded out to the pitcher in both at-bats.

Report: Hunter, Pujols almost came to blows

Reports indicate Pine Bluff native Torii Hunter and Albert Pujols had a run in when they were teammates on the Los Angeles Angels last season.

According to a report by CBS Sports senior baseball columnist Scott Miller, the two almost came to blows.

“The two-year downhill toboggan run of owner Arte Moreno’s broken franchise has created a suffocatingly tense atmosphere throughout the organization best illustrated by a team meeting last August, in which All-Star Torii Hunter had to be physically restrained from punching out $240 million man Albert Pujols,” Miller wrote in his column published Friday.
