Cleveland named region pitcher of the week

LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas-Little Rock senior Chance Cleveland was named the CollegeBaseballInsider.com Louisville Slugger Southeast Region Pitcher of the Week for his complete-game, three-hit shutout against Western Kentucky on April 26.

The Watson Chapel graduate struck out 10 Western Kentucky batters in his second straight complete game. UALR won 5-0, marking the fifth time in six starts he allowed two runs or fewer.

Cleveland ranks second in the Sun Belt Conference in opposing batting average (.205) and innings pitched (80). He second in the league and 22nd nationally in strikeouts with 77.

Ross among 17 to try out for Falcons

ATLANTA — Former Arkansas-Pine Bluff linebacker Bill Ross is among 17 who will try out with the Atlanta Falcons during minicamp, according to a blog on the team’s website.

Ross led UAPB in tackles each of his two seasons on campus. He also had six career interceptions.

That makes it two from this past season’s SWAC champion Golden Lions vying for a spot on the 53-man roster in the fall. Defensive end Brandon Thurmond signed with the Falcons as an undrafted free agent Saturday.

Warren’s Childs runs sprints

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Former Warren and Arkansas wide receiver Greg Childs ran sprints in plain view of reporters Monday, months after tearing patellar tendons in both of his knees during training camp, 1500ESPN.com reported.

According to the article, Childs did not put a timeline on his return. He suffered the injury Aug. 4 and missed his rookie season.

He said he’s not close to 100 percent healthy but listed off drills and routes he can complete while rehabilitating from the injury, 1500ESPN.com reported.
