PB edges Fair

Lorenzo Williams scored two goals and the Pine Bluff Zebras defeated Little Rock Fair 3-1 Wednesday night at Jordan Stadium.

Williams scored at the 20 minute mark and with about two minutes left in the game.

Melik Jenkins chipped in with a goal at the 30 minute mark.

Pine Bluff improves to 3-8 in the 7A/6A South conference. The Zebras will face El Dorado on Friday.

UAM lands four on All-GAC softball teams

BENTONVILLE — The Arkansas-Monticello softball team received four selections to the 2013 All-Great American Conference teams revealed Wednesday at the GAC Awards Ceremony on the eve of the opening round of the league’s championship tournament.

Senior designated player Maggie Sands and junior outfielder Beth Johnson each earned first team selections, while sophomore pitcher Katie Slaughter and junior catcher Brittany Eitel earned spots on the second team. For Sands, this is her second consecutive All-GAC first team selection. Johnson and Eitel each earned an honorable mention last season, while Slaughter earns the first all-conference honor of her two-year career.

Sands finished the regular season ranked ninth in the league with a .370 batting average. She had eight doubles, one triple and 23 RBIs. Johnson finished the regular season ranked second on the team in batting average (.329). She had eight doubles, one triple and team-highs in both home runs (eight) and RBIs (30).

UAM will open the GAC Tournament against Southern Arkansas today at 4 p.m. at the Tiger Athletic Complex on the campus of Bentonville High School.

Penn State QB to transfer

Penn State sophomore quarterback Steven Bench will transfer after competing for the vacant starting job this spring.

Bench has been granted his release and will depart Penn State after completing the spring semester, which ends May 3.

A team spokesman confirmed to ESPN.com that it was Bench’s decision to leave and that there are no disciplinary or academic problems involved.

Bench competed in Saturday’s Blue-White Game and completed 9 of 15 passes for 99 yards and a touchdown.
