HOOVER, Ala. — The Pine Bluff Braves won their opening game of the Southern Timber Wood Bat World Championship, but finished the day with a loss that ended their 15-game winning streak.
In a 2-1 win over the Emerald Coast Vaqueros of Pensacola, Fla., Michael Newby struck out 13 batters in a seven-inning, complete victory.
Pine Bluff (16-2) scored both of its runs in the first inning. Corey McCoy and Chase Smith started off the rally with hits, and Deonta Howard and Derrick Houser drove in a run each. Emerald Coast scored on a bloop hit in the third.
In a 4-0 loss to the Alabama Outlaws, all runs were unearned. The Braves gave up three of them in the fourth and the other in the seventh.
The Braves return to pool play today against the Florence (Ala.) Nitros at 1:30 p.m.
