Zuber fans 14 in Bulldogs’ victory


JONESBORO — Tyler Zuber struck out 14 and held Beebe to four hits as White Hall began its 5A baseball state championship defense with a 6-0 victory Thursday at Nettleton High School.

The win puts White Hall (18-5) in the quarterfinal round against Little Rock Christian at 2:30 p.m. today at Nettleton.

Zuber also had two hits and batted in two runs for the Bulldogs, who finished second in the 5A-South. Austin Lewis lined two hits and had an RBI, and Landon Reed drove in an RBI with a hit.

Also at the 5A tournament, Wynne stunned 5A-South champion Watson Chapel 11-6, but no further details were available.

Star City 7, Ozark 0

HARRISON — Zack House went six innings and the Bulldogs scored three runs in the second inning as Star City (18-9) defeated Ozark 7-0 in the first round of the 4A state tournament.

House allowed just one hit with six strikeouts. He was also 2 for 3 with three runs scored, one RBI and a walk. Blake Wynn pitched the seventh inning and allowed just one hit. Wynn was 2 for 3 at the plate with two RBIs.

Tye Brown was 2 for 4 and Austin Capps was 1 for 2 with a solo home run for Star City. Capps was also hit-by-a-pitch twice. Cole Muckelroy laid down a sacrifice squeeze bunt in the fifth to plate one run. It was the fourth time this season in which Muckelroy has laid down a squeeze bunt.

Star City will play Stuttgart today at 2:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals at Pippin Field.

Fordyce 2, Elkins 0

SEARCY — Fordyce (24-2) defeated Elkins in the first round of the 3A state tournament at Harding Academy thanks to a one-hit shutout thrown by Ross Rogers.

Rogers struck out 12 and allowed just one hit in seven innings.

Austin Hollis was 2 for 3 and Daniel Harris 1 for 3 with two RBIs for the Redbugs.

Fordyce will play the winner of Episcopal Collegiate vs. Manila today at 2:30 p.m. at Harding University.

Cedarville 9, McGehee 6

SEARCY — McGehee (11-15) lost to Cedarville in the first round of the 3A state tournament at Harding Academy.

Starting pitcher Derek Bates went four innings and gave up four runs for McGehee. Tabor McGraw pitched the final three innings and gave up five runs.

For the Owls, Jared Carter was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, Bates was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Logan French was 3 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs.

Conway St. Joseph 4, Woodlawn 2

EL DORADO — Conway St. Joseph scored three runs in the fourth inning to eliminate defending state champion Woodlawn (19-11) in the first round of the 2A state tournament at Parkers Chapel High School.

Woodlawn’s Bret Boyd is tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings. He also walked three and struck out four.

Jacob Richardson pitched 2 2/3, allowed just one hit and gave up three walks with one strikeout. Richardson hit an RBI single in the first and an RBI single in third for the Bears’ only two runs. Trey Chapman had Woodlawn’s only other hit.

SOFTBALL

Hamburg 10, Stuttgart 2

ASHDOWN — The Lady Ricebirds were knocked out of the first round of the 4A state tournament.

Johnna Seeman singled and drove in two runs for Stuttgart (13-11), and Sydney Nash had the team’s only other hit.

White Hall’s 5A first-round game against Greene County Tech and Woodlawn’s 2A first-round game against Conway St. Joseph were stopped by rain. Both games will resume at 10 a.m. today.

BOYS SOCCER

Vilonia 3, White Hall 2, OT

HARRISON — A golden goal 4 minutes into extra time gave Vilonia the win over White Hall in the 5A state tournament.

Tyler Maynard assisted Jordan Lawson on White Hall’s first goal in the fifth minute. Ben Malone then made a free kick to Lawson on the back post in the 22nd, and Lawson converted.

White Hall finished the season 10-9-2.

HARRISON — The Lady Raiders pitched a shutout of the Lady Bulldogs in the 5A state tournament, scoring in the 26th and 30th minutes.
