WC, Dumas bid for state hoops; WH vies again for baseball, softball rights

Watson Chapel has put its name in the hat for hosting rights to the 5A and 2A state basketball tournaments this season.

The Arkansas Activities Association released the names of the schools bidding to host tournaments for the rest of the calendar year. Sites will be named Thursday.

If Watson Chapel is selected for either tournament, it would be held Feb. 26-March 2 at the Pine Bluff Convention Center, site of last season’s 4A tournament.

Chapel is bidding against Alma for the 5A tourney and against Buffalo Island Central, Carlisle, Marmaduke and Rector for the 2A event.

Dumas is a candidate to host the 4A state tournament during the same dates. The 8-4A Conference school is bidding against Cave City, Heber Springs, Highland, Lincoln and Maumelle.

White Hall is in the running for the 5A, 3A, 2A and 1A baseball and softball state playoffs, May 9-11. It has hosted the 2A baseball tournament for at least the past two years.

In baseball, Star City is vying for the 4A South Regional along with Ashdown, and Woodlawn hopes to outbid Dierks, Junction City and Parkers Chapel for the 2A South Regional. Regional dates are May 3-6.

In softball, Monticello is a candidate along with Ashdown for the 4A South Regional, to be held during the same dates.

The baseball, basketball and softball tournaments do not include championship games. The boys and girls basketball finals will be held at Barton Coliseum in Little Rock on dates to be announced, with the baseball and softball finals set for the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, May 17-18.
