UAPB upsets Alabama A&M in SWAC soccer opener

ALEXANDRIA, La. — Czelene Carrera scored two goals in leading Arkansas-Pine Bluff to a 2-1 upset victory over Alabama A&M in the opening game of the SWAC women’s soccer tournament.

UAPB (6-13-2), the defending champion, came into the tournament as the No. 4 seed out of the Western Division but knocked off the Eastern Division champion. Now, after a change in the bracket, the Lady Lions will play Mississippi Valley State, a 1-0 winner over Grambling State, at 3:30 p.m. today in the semifinals.

Carrera scored the first goal of the game in the 27th minute off an assist from All-SWAC first-team defender Molly Stone. Carrera then took a pass from sister Celeste Carrera and converted 3 minutes later.

Alabama A&M pulled within 2-1 in the 76th on an Ana Huertas penalty kick. A final shot by Carre Rodriguez missed high off the goal as time expired.

Alyssa Cobbs made seven saves for UAPB, which was outshot 18-9. The Lady Lions have been undefeated in their last six games, winning five of them.
