Star City to meet Malvern again

CAVE CITY — Tonight, Star City will get its shot at revenge — and a second straight trip to the 4A state girls basketball final.

Star City won its quarterfinal game over Gentry 52-38 on Friday behind Tyeshia Harris’ 18 points and eight rebounds. Kindra Redix added 13 points and Jaida Harden had seven rebounds and eight assists to go with 11 points.

Star City led 23-19 at halftime and gradually pulled away from Malvern in the second half.

The Lady Bulldogs will now face Malvern for the second straight week. Last Saturday, the Lady Leopards defeated the Lady Bulldogs 54-40 to win the 4A South Region championship.

Tonight’s winner will play either Prairie Grove or Valley View next weekend for the state championship.

4A BOYS

CAVE CITY — Monticello’s best season in recent years ended in heartbreak Friday night after 12 extra minutes. Details were not available.

The loss ended the Billies’ season at 27-4. They won their first conference championship since 1998 and finished second last week in the 4A South Region.

3A BOYS

McGehee 71, Osceola 60

SEARCY — At Riverview High, McGehee overcame a 9-0 deficit within the first minute and turned the tide against the Seminoles in a 3A quarterfinal.

McGehee (23-3) will play Episcopal Collegiate at 7:30 tonight. It will be the second state semifinals in three years for the Owls.

Zach Ellis scored 26 points, Maurice Hudson had 18 and Marcus Miller added 16 for the Owls, who trailed by as many as 13 points and were down by three at halftime. That deficit quickly turned into a nine-point lead at the end of the third quarter.

“We played better defense, took b etter shots, quit settling for outside shots and took it to the hole,” McGehee assistant coach Reid Smith said.
