McGehee holds off Smackover

McGehee 14, Smackover 6

McGEHEE — A week McGehee coming back from 14 points down with four minutes left to beat Prescott, McGehee had to hold off Smackover’s comeback.

The Owls (8-1, 5-1 6-3A Conference) were able to hold on and beat Smackover 14-6.

“Tough. That’s the number one word I would use with Smackover,” McGehee coach Marcus Haddock said. “It was a dog fight and t hey are very good.”

McGehee scored on Roger Blackmon’s reverse in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead. The Owls next score came in the third quarter on Steven King’s touchdown for a 14-0 lead.

Smackover scored with two minutes left on the game on a fourth-and-10 play from McGehee’s 19-yard line.

Smackover then recovered the onside kick, but McGehee forced a turnover on downs on four plays to seal the game.

“Every yard we gained (Friday) was contested,” Haddock said. “There were some opportunities to pass, but with the lead and the way our defense was playing, we didn’t want to make a mistake.”
