The 8-4A Warren Lumberjacks (0-1) will travel to Little Rock for a matchup against the 5A-Central Pulaski Academy Bruins (1-0).
The game will take place at Joe B. Hatcher Stadium at 7 p.m. Thursday and will be televised through the CSS (Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast) network. The game can be picked up in Little Rock on Comcast channel 269 and on high definition channel 1687.
Warren is coming off a 35 -21 loss to the two-time defending 7A champion Fayetteville Bulldogs during the Simmons First/Hootens.com Kickoff Week that was held Sept. 2. Since the season opener, the Lumberjacks have been dealing with injuries to some of their starters.
“We got beat up in the first game. Some of our guys will be a game-time decision and some will be out for a little while,” Warren coach Bo Hembree said. “We will need some of our other players to step up. We’ve got to be able to handle onside kicks and stop them (Pulaski Academy) when they go for it on fourth down.”
The Lumberjacks allowed three touchdown passes against Fayetteville and should be challenged again through the air Thursday as Pulaski Academy’s junior quarterback Will Hefley completed 31 of 43 passes for 463 yards and four touchdowns in a 37-29 season-opening win at home against Memphis University Studies. With that, Hembree has used the unusual 10-day gap in between the first and second game to his benefit and does not view playing on Thursday rather than on Friday as a disadvantage.
“I like playing early,” he said. “We started practice (last) Friday instead of Monday and we used the three extra days to improve.”
If all healthy, Warren senior quarterback Drake Jones will count on the production of junior receiver Darveon Brown (six catches, 61 yards) and senior Von Eric Gonder (five catches, 40 yards, 1 TD), whom Pulaski Academy head coach Kevin Kelley said “are as athletic as any in the state”.
“It is great to play a team like Pulaski Academy and it will be a great atmosphere and an honor to represent our school,” Hembree said.
