MONTICELLO — Warren was able to take a four-point lead before the half and held on to beat Monticello 34-16 in a key 8-4A Conference game.
Monticello (4-4, 3-2 8-4A Conference), which fell into a tie for third place with Star City in the division, kicked a field goal for a 3-0 lead in the first quarter.
Darveon Brown gave Warren (5-3, 5-0) a 7-3 lead with a 70-yard run in the first quarter.
Monticello retook the lead in the second quarter with a touchdown. But with less than 4 minutes before halftime, Brown scored again on a 4-yard run to make it 14-10.
Warren started to pull away in the third quarter when Justin Gorman hit Von Eric Gonder for a 16-yard touchdown and a 21-10 lead.
The Lumberjacks got a turnover and Kilay Cox scored on a 6-yard run for a 27-10 lead.
Cox finished Warren’s touchdown on another 8-yard run and Monticello scored again on Diante Barnhill’s touchdown run to make it 34-16.
Cox finished the game with 168 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries. Gorman was 11 for 17 passing with 165 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
On defense, Aaron Church had three tackles for loss for Warren and Kendrick Newton had double-digit tackles.
