Lady Wildcats leave no doubt in blowout

WHITE HALL – Watson Chapel made easy work of White Hall on Tuesday night as they Lady Wildcats defeated the Lady Bulldogs 61-30.

The Lady Wildcats (16-6, 11-0 in 5A-South) outscored the Lady Bulldogs (9-14, 4-8) 17-6 in the first quarter and never looked back.

“We knew our guard play was going to be big, because they were going to shut down our post players,” Watson Chapel head coach Leslie Henderson said.

Senior Chelsea Payne led Chapel with 16 points and junior Kierra Cox had 12 points.

With 6:15 left in the first quarter, Payne gave the Lady Wildcats a 3-2 lead when she nailed a three-pointer from the corner. Payne followed that with a basket in the middle of the paint and Cox hit a floater to give Chapel a 7-2 lead.

“The guards came out and did a tremendous job of putting the ball in the basket,” Henderson said.

White Hall’s only lead was at the beginning of the game when Jae’Lisa Allen banked a basket off the glass.

Allen finished the game with 11 points in the game to lead the Lady Bulldogs.

Allen scored five of her points in the second quarter. She made a shot following an inbounds play to cut the deficit to 19-8.

After making one of two from the free throw line with 5:14 left in the first half, Allen made a pull-up jumper to cut the score to 21-11.

At the end of the first half, Chapel led White Hall 32-16.

“It is nice to take what people give you,” Henderson said of her guard play. “But they came through by making their shots.”

Watson Chapel stretched their lead to 44-19 in the third quarter following a 10-0 run.

By the time Chapel had taken a 30-point lead to force the ‘mercy rule,’ Henderson had already pulled her starters.

Senior Jasmine Bell made one of two from the free throw to give Chapel the 55-25 lead with 5:59 left in the game.

Senior Kamera Bozeman contributed with eight points and senior Chapel Jones scored nine points.

Chapel will host Hope on Friday at 6 p.m. White Hall will play at Camden Fairview on Friday.
