Junior High Roundup: Wildcats dominate in opener


The Malvern Leopards scored on their second play of the game with a 66-yard touchdown run, but it would be their only points of the game as the Watson Chapel Wildcats scored 30 unanswered points to win the junior high season opener 30-8 Thursday night at home.

Chapel took its first lead of the game right before halftime when Ja’Kobi Jackson intercepted a Malvern pass and returned it 75 yards for a touchdown. The two-point conversion was successful and the Wildcats had a 14-8 lead.

Jackson later scored in the fourth quarter on a 10-yard run and the two-point conversion was good to give the Wildcats a 22-8 lead.

Simmeon Blair, who finished the game 5 for 9 for 83 yards with a touchdown, capped off the scoring with a 31-yard touchdown run. A successful conversion gave Chapel the 30-8 lead.

Blair put the Wildcats on the board when he completed a 26-yard touchdown pass to Keyshawn Johnson at the start of the second quarter.

Neither team scored in the third.

Chapel finished the game with 258 total yards including 175 yards on the ground. The Wildcats (1-0) will open the conference season at North Pulaski on Sept. 12.

Star City 14, Dollarway 6

STAR CITY — The Bulldogs prevailed Thursday night despite 181 all-purpose yards by the Cardinals (0-1).

Anthony Scott scored from 5 yards out with 2 minutes left in the fourth quarter to trim Star City’s lead to just eight points. Scott finished with six carries for 32 yards and the touchdown.

For Dollarway, Dionte Wilson had 90 all-purpose yards and Jarvis Hardnette had four carries for 29 yards. Devonte Brown was 2 for 3 passing for 20 yards and one interception. He also rushed for 10 yards.

Star City scored in the first and third quarter. After converting a two-point conversion on its first score, Star City missed the attempt in the third quarter.

Dollarway will play Little Rock McClellan on Sept. 12 at home.

Lake Hamilton 48, Jack Robey 6

PEARCY — Jalen Deshazier returned a kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown for Jack Robey’s only touchdown of the night as the Colts lost 48-6 to Lake Hamilton on Thursday.

No other stats were available for the game.

Jack Robey (0-1) will play at North Little Rock on Sept. 12.
