Dollarway shakes off nervousness, advances to state

HEBER SPRINGS — Dollarway had to shake off nervousness against a team it narrowly defeated in last year’s 4A state quarterfinal, this time to make it back to state.

Behind Davonne Chapman’s 13 points, the 2-4A District champion Cardinals came from a 16-15 halftime deficit to defeat Jonesboro Westside 40-30 Wednesday in the first boys game of the 4A East Region Tournament.

“We had to come out and make some stops,” Dollarway coach Ellis Berry said. “We were a little nervous. We needed to work the ball inside to Chapman.”

Neither team scored more than nine points in a quarter until Dollarway (25-2) outscored Westside 15-10 in the fourth. The Warriors were held to five points in the third.

Jeremiah Young scored eight points and Kabion Ento added seven for Dollarway, which outrebounded Westside 26-24.

Dollarway, which has matched its win total from last season, will take on the winner of tonight’s Brookland vs. Heber Springs game at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
