Dollarway hits road for next challenge

The 2-4A Dollarway Cardinals (1-0) continue their nonconference schedule with a road trip to the 7A/6A Central Little Rock Parkview Patriots (0-1) on Friday night. The Cardinals will look to even the all-time series against the Patriots at two games apiece with a victory.

The Cardinals are coming off a 34-19 victory over Helena-West Helena Central whereas the Patriots are coming off a tough 32-20 loss to Little Rock Mills. Parkview led Mills 20-16 in the third quarter, but Mills scored the game’s final 16 points.

Dollarway’s head coach Cortez Lee said it’s always a challenge when facing a higher conference, especially on the road.

“There’s always a thing with the number of players they have and the level of competition they play,” Lee said. “You can always expect them to be better prepared.”

Dollarway defeated Parkview 31-16 last year at home, but lost the team’s previous two meetings. On Friday, the Cardinals will be looking for a great performance by senior leader and quarterback Joshua Liddell. Lee spoke highly of Liddell and his leadership on the field.

“We need to have someone who has a level head and can get us in and out of the right situations,” he said. “We have somebody who has the ability to make that play and (Liddell) has the ability to do so.”

Liddell threw for two touchdowns and ran for two touchdowns in the win over Central last week at Cardinal Stadium.

Dollarway, ranked third in 4A by Hooten’s Arkansas Football magazine, will look to improve from last week’s victory. Aside from a win, Lee is looking for specific improvements on Friday night that will show his team is making progress from week to week.

“We need to correct all the mistakes we made last week,” he said. “We are trying to detail them and work on all those situations throughout practice.

“We will see a better game plan and a more improved team this week.”
