The Dollarway backfield believes it has found the team chemistry it was lacking last season.
“Last year, we were more at pointing fingers and blaming one individual,” junior running back Keyshawn Williams said. “Now we just got to blame the whole team, so we can get it together.”
Evidence of their new-found bond is the fact that Williams’ biggest goal this year is to win a state championship and not so much an individual goal.
“My goal is to reach over a 1,500 yards this year, but really my goal is to win state,” Williams said.
Williams ran for almost 800 yards and eight touchdowns last fall.
“I expect him to have a good year,” head coach Cortez Lee said. “He is going to be a pretty good feature back.”
Lee said Williams is a leader on the squad.
“He works hard and he wants the ball,” Lee said. “He wants to be apart of everything that’s everything that’s going on out there.
“I just see a lot of potential in him.”
Last year, the Cardinals finished with 10 wins and a tie for the 2-4A Conference championship. If the team wants to repeat its success and have a chance for a state title, Williams said it is going to take a lot of work.
“The team will just have to work hard together,” Williams said. “Not get an attitude with each other or point fingers at each other.
“Just work together.”
Returning for the Cardinals is senior Joshua Liddell, who recently moved to quarterback.
“He has to ability to run and throw and also improvise,” Lee said. “He can be a leader.”
Liddell ran for 1,290 yards with 12 touchdowns a year ago.
“Most of our quarterbacks have the ability to run and throw,” Lee said. “It fits our offensive scheme.”
Also returning this year is running back Darius Robinson. He rushed for 600 yards and seven touchdowns. Other than Jeremiah Young – who graduated in May – the Cardinals have almost their entire starting backfield returning.
“We are going to count on these guys to help lead us in our offensive scheme,” Lee said.
Dollarway will play at Little Rock McClellan in a scrimmage on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Cardinals’ regular season begins Sept. 6 when they host Helena-West Helena Central at 7 p.m.
