Jack Robey cruises past WC in Liddell Classic

ALTHEIMER — Two Jack Robey players finished in double figures Saturday in a 39-26 junior high boys basketball victory over Watson Chapel in the James Liddell Classic.

Roderick Bailey scored 13 points and Marquis Smith added 10 to lead Robey (9-3). Xavier Smith contributed eight points to the win.

In boys, Dollarway 49, Dumas 37; Marion 48, Stuttgart 36; Little Rock Fair 46, Monticello 45; and in girls, Watson Chapel 33, Jack Robey 15; Dollarway 42, Dumas 21; McGehee 26, Monticello 10; and Helena-West Helena Central 50, Marianna 19.

The tournament resumes Monday.

Butler takes down top-ranked Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS — Alex Barlow hit a 6-foot jumper with 2.4 seconds left to give Butler an 88-86 overtime victory over No. 1 Indiana on Saturday in the Crossroads Classic.

Barlow is a walk-on who reportedly gave up scholarship offers to play baseball at Butler and learn how to coach basketball from head man Brad Stevens. He finished with a career-high six points in Butler’s first defeat of a No. 1-ranked team.

Former Arkansas guard Rotnei Clarke scored 19 points to lead Butler (8-2). Indiana (9-1) was led by Victor Oladipo and Cody Zeller with 18 points each.

Southern names Odums permanent head coach

BATON ROUGE, La. — Southern removed the “interim” from Dawson Odums’ title and named him permanent head football coach Friday, the school announced.

Odums led Southern to a 4-5 record after replacing Stump Mitchell, who was fired two games into the season. Odums became only the second coach to lead Southern to wins over Grambling State, Jackson State and Florida A&M in his first season running the program.

Southern went 4-7 and 3-6 in the SWAC.
