Star City girls hold Lake Village to 6 points

STAR CITY — Star City shut out Lake Village in all but one quarter Thursday in a 74-6 girls basketball victory to open 8-4A Conference play.

Lake Village scored its only points in the second quarter after falling behind 14-0 through one quarter. Star City led 36-6 at halftime and 58-6 through three quarters.

Tyeshia Harris led Star City (9-2, 1-0 in 8-4A) with 16 points. She was followed by Jaida Harden and Nikita Wainwright with 15 points apiece.

Fourth-quarter spurt carries Lumberjacks

WARREN — Warren outscored Hamburg 26-16 in the fourth quarter Thursday night, going on to a 66-52 home victory to open up 8-4A Conference boys basketball play.

Darveon Brown led Warren (2-0, 1-0 in 8-4A) with 19 points. He was followed by Ryan Clary with 12 and VonEric Gonder and Lafoy Smith with 11 each.

Warren girls hold off Hamburg by 2

WARREN — Chakendra Roberson scored almost half of Warren’s points, helping the Lady Jacks edge Hamburg 48-46 Thursday night.

Roberson finished with 23 points for Warren, which was tied with Hamburg at 18 at halftime. Shaniqua Tickett added 18 for the Lady Jacks.

Hamilton going to Angels

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Josh Hamilton is headed to the Los Angeles Angels.

The longtime Texas Rangers outfielder has agreed to a five-year, $125 million contract, according to MLB.com, which cited sources in a story on the Angels’ website. The Angels didn’t speak about such a transaction publicly.

Hamilton won the AL Most Valuable Player award in 2010 and led the Rangers to the World Series in 2010 and 2011, losing both times to San Francisco and St. Louis, respectively.
