Chapel earns share of conference title


HOT SPRINGS — The Watson Chapel Wildcats (18-5, 12-2 in the 5A South) defeated Hot Springs 18-4 in five innings Monday. Justin Pierce was credited with the win. Jaylen Jackson was 2 for 2 with four RBIs, including a three-run home run. The Wildcats will play Thursday at 5 pm. at Nettleton in Jonesboro.

Ashdown 14,

Star City 0

ASHDOWN — Star City managed just two hits as Ashdown defeated Star City 14-0 in the 4A South Region tournament on Monday.

Blake Wynn takes the loss as Ashdown tallied for 18 hits in just five innings. Star City (17-9) will play in the 4A state tournament at Harrison on Thursday. The Bulldogs’ opponent is unknown at this time.

Junction City 6,

Woodlawn 5

DIERKS — Woodlawn’s effort to rally from a three-run deficit fell short as the Bears fell 6-5 to Junction City in the 2A South regional tournament on Monday.

J.P. Aiken hit a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth to cut Junction City’s lead to just one run but that would be as close as Woodlawn (19-10) would get.

Aiken is tagged with the loss after allowing six runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. He also struck out five and walked two. Jacob Richardson pitched 3 1/3 and did not give up a hit. He had three strikeouts as well.

Aiken was 2 for 3 and Blake Erstine was 2 for 3. Richardson and Colton Williams had RBI singles in the third.

Woodlawn will play Thursday in the 2A state tournament at Parkers Chapel.

Fordyce 5, Genoa Central 2

HORATIO — The Fordyce Redbugs (23-2, 8-0) beat Genoa Central in the 3A Region 4 championship on Monday. Brayden Chambers earned the win on the mound. He went 5 2/3 innings and recorded seven strikeouts. At the plate, Cole Johnson was 1 for 3, with a solo homerun. Ross Rodgers and Daniel Harris were 2 for 4, and Tommy Tidwell was also 1 for 3. The Redbugs will play Thursday at 5 pm. at Harding Academy in Searcy in the 3A state tournament.

Stuttgart 15, Valley View 4

HEBER SPRINGS — The Stuttgart Ricebirds (17-8) defeated Valley View in the 4A East Region semifinal at Heber Springs on Monday. Ragen Counce received the win for the Ricebirds going 6 1/3 innings. He allowed three runs (three earned) on eight hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Stuttgart racked up 18 hits. Carter Ward and Gere Pelam each had three hits.

The Ricebirds will face Brookland tomorrow in the 4A East Finals at 6:30 pm in Heber Springs

SOFTBALL

Woodlawn 4, Bearden 2

NORPHLET — The Woodlawn Lady Bears (22-7) rallied to beat Bearden Monday during the semifinals of the North Region. Lilly Henderson was the winning pitcher. The Lady Bears were down 2-0 going in to the sixth inning. Ana Gavin laid down a sacrifice bunt, and Woodlawn scored two runs on a Bearden error. Laynie Nelson’s RBI single gave Woodlawn the lead 3-2.

Becca Britt scored their last run of the night on a fielder’s choice. The Lady Bears will face Springhill today in the finals at 2:30 pm.

Watson Chapel 16,

Hot Springs 0

HOT SPRINGS — Watson Chapel’s Maegan Greer pitched a one-hit shutout as the Lady Wildcats (14-5, 12-2 in 5A South) defeated Hot Springs 16-0 on Monday in their final conference game of the regular season.

Megan Moore led Watson Chapel at the plate, finishing 4 for 4. Sydney Crossett was 3 for 4, Natalie Johnson was 2 for 3 with a home run and Lexie Downing was 2 for 4.

Watson Chapel will play in a non-conference game today at Sylvan Hills before facing Paragould in the 5A state tournament in Hope.
