Cards advance to 4A East final

HEBER SPRINGS — Dollarway shot better than 50 percent from the field and got 14 points each from Joshua Liddell and Davonne Chapman on Saturday in a 52-32 victory over Brookland to advance to the championship game of the 4A East Region Tournament.

Dollarway (26-2) will play Pocahontas or Gosnell at 8:30 p.m. Monday.

Liddell also had five steals, three blocks, two assists and hit 4 of 4 free throws. DaQuan Christmas added 10 points.

“Everybody was focused as if it was the last game of the season,” Dollarway coach Ellis Berry said, his team already having qualified for the 4A state tournament with a win over Jonesboro Westside.

Dollarway led 27-16 at halftime. The Cardinals hit 19 of 36 field-goal attempts, 13 of 17 free throws, forced Brookland into 21 turnovers and outrebounded Brookland 25-11.

“We kept pressure on them, we got transition baskets, easy layups,” Berry said.


McGehee 69, Drew Central 50

PRESCOTT — The Owls (21-3) avenged their 8-3A District championship loss to the Pirates (23-10) and easily defeated them for the 3A Region 4 championship.

No statistics were available.

It’s McGehee’s third win over Drew Central in four tries this season.

The Owls will play the fourth-place team from Region 1 at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 3A state tournament at Riverview High in Searcy. The Pirates will play the third-place team from Region 1 at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.


Drew Central 45, McGehee 38

PRESCOTT — The Lady Pirates woke up from a 10-5 deficit, outscored the Lady Owls 16-4 in the second quarter and went on to win the 3A Region 4 title in the fourth meeting between the two teams.

Drew Central (23-10), the 8-3A Conference champion, has beaten McGehee (14-8) twice this season. McGehee beat Drew Central eight days earlier for the district title.

Shakyla Begnaud led McGehee with 22 points, but Drew Central got 15 points from Kari Milton, 12 from Cierra Gardner and 11 from Avion Gardner.

Drew Central will play 1 p.m. Wednesday against the fourth-place team in Region 1 in the 3A state tournament at Riverview. McGehee will play against the third-place team in Region 1 at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
