HARMONY GROVE — Cole Johnson threw for nearly 400 yards for Fordyce, whose comeback attempt against Camden Harmony Grove came up just short.
Rashad Allen scored on a 5-yard run with 5:06 left to pull Fordyce (7-2, 4-2 in 6-3A Conference) within 48-43. The Redbugs got the ball back with about 2 minutes left, but failed to score again as time expired.
Johnson completed 20 of 32 passes for 398 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. His first touchdown pass went for 62 yards to Charles York on the first play from scrimmage.
Harmony Grove then scored on 51- and 20-yard passes to take a 12-7 lead in the first quarter.
Larry Buckley put Fordyce back in front early in the second quarter with a 19-yard TD run. After Harmony Grove regained the lead at 18-14, Allen ran 63 yards for a score to give the Redbugs a 21-18 advantage. But the Hornets scored on two short runs to build a 33-21 lead.
Johnson closed out the quarter with a 1-yard carry to draw the Redbugs within 33-28.
It was 36-34 in Fordyce’s favor after Xavier Warner returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown, but Harmony Grove stormed back later in the third quarter with two touchdowns to lead 48-36.
Allen had 10 catches for 179 yards and York added catches for 175 yards. Josh Stroud converted six point-after attempts for Fordyce.
