Bulldogs hang on at home

WHITE HALL — The White Hall Bulldogs grabbed a much-needed and much-deserved win Friday night when they defeated the DeWitt Dragons 84-76 at home.

“It was a much-needed victory and it got us back on a winning way,” head coach Marc Stringer said. “It was a good offense output by us, but we still have a lot of work to do to get ready for Monticello.”

The game was still up for grabs when DeWitt scored inside to tie the game with about 2 minutes left in the fourth quarter. But White Hall’s Lamarcus Davis gave the Bulldogs a two-point lead after a quick bucket with about 1:37 left.

D.J. Freeman grabbed a missed free throw and scored again to give the Bulldogs a 75-71 lead with about 1:32 left in the game. From there, the Bulldogs would use two free throws and another score by Freeman to take a nine-point lead and secure the win.

“It was definitely back and forth,” Strigner said. “It seemed like every time we take a lead, they go on a little run of their own.

“It was good for our kids to have a game like that. We showed a little bit of will and heart to continuously come back and keep fighting.”

Freeman led White Hall with 26 points and nine rebounds. Percy Arnold had 17 points and Davis had 15. The Bulldogs improved to 2-3 and will play Monticello on Tuesday.

White Hall took a 16-9 lead near the end of the first quarter when Freeman hit a two-point jumper from just inside the free-throw line. By the end of the first quarter, the Bulldogs led 18-11.

DeWitt was able to tie the game early in the second quarter thanks to a pair of free throws.

White Hall was able to answer and open their lead to six points after back-to-back three pointers.

At the 3:19 mark, White Hall’s lead increased to 27-22 when Arnold completed a three-point play.

Arnold ended the half when he scored on a fast break layup right after the buzzer sound. The quick score gave White Hall a 38-29 lead at halftime.
