Princess of Sylmar reigns supreme at Kentucky Oaks


LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Princess of Sylmar helped get the Kentucky Derby weekend started by winning the second-biggest race at Churchill Downs in May.

Princess, ridden by Mike E. Smith, overcame a rough start to win the $1 million Kentucky Oaks by 34 feet Friday, turning in a time of 1 minute, 49.17 seconds in the 1 1/8 mile dirt race for 3-year-old females.

Todd Pletcher is the winning owner.

According to Equibase, Princess was roughed up between horses, but advanced between horses and continued to advance four-wide through the second turn and wore down the leaders in the final yards. She returned $79.60 for the win, $29.40 to place and $14 to show.

Beholder was second and paid $9 and $5.60. Unlimited Budget was third and paid $3.80.

For her victory, Princess earned $589,000.
