UAPB splits doubleheader with Texas Southern


HOUSTON — The Arkansas Pine Bluff baseball team split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon defeating Texas Southern 5-1 in the first game and losing 8-3 in the second.

Texas Southern (11-11, 3-5 SWAC) scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning in the second game to break open a 3-2 game and take a six run lead heading into the top of the ninth inning.

Texas Southern also scored a run in the second and two in the fifth.

UAPB scored a run in the third, fifth and ninth inning. The Golden Lions (6-16, 3-4 SWAC) had 10 hits in the game and also committed four errors.

Jaron Gold (1-2) was credited with the loss in game two after allowing two runs (both unearned) on two hits in 1 1/3 innings of work. UAPB starter Mickey Ramirez went just 3 2/3 and allowed one run (earned) on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

Redmond Floyd pitched 2 1/3 and allowed five runs (none earned) on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

For Texas Southern, Robert Pearson (2-3) was credited with the win after allowing two runs (both earned) on five hits with five walks and two strikeouts. UAPB’s Isias Alcantar was 2 for 4 with a run scored and Kirby Campbell was 1 for 3 with a run and two walks. Dylan Calhoun was 1 for 5 with a RBI.

Mike Wieland was 1 for 2 with a RBI and a walk. Cody DeMara was 1 for 3 with a RBI and a walk. Mike Ludwig was 1 for 3 with a run scored and a walk.

For Texas Southern, Jerry Ford II was 3 for 5 with a run and a RBI. De’Mario Thibodeaux was 2 for 4 with a RBI.

In the first game, UAPB scored two runs in the seventh, two in the ninth and one in the fourth as the Golden Lions defeated Texas Southern 5-1. Jim Ploeger (3-3) pitched a complete game for UAPB, allowing just one run (earned) on six hits with two walks and 14 strikeouts.

Texas Southern’s Felix Gomex (1-3) was credited with the loss after allowing three runs (all earned) on nine hits with a walk and six strikeouts.

For UAPB, DeMara was 4 of 5 with two RBIs and Jacob Whitney was 1 for 3 with two RBIs.

For Texas Southern, Ellis Stephney was 2 for 3.

UAPB will face Texas Southern today at 1 p.m. to close out the series.
