A-State escapes Troy

JONESBORO — Michael Gordon totaled 115 yards on eight carries and scored two touchdowns, as Arkansas State held off previously unbeaten Troy to take a 41-34 victory Thursday night.

The Red Wolves (2-1) built a 20-7 lead, but saw that evaporate before halftime. Adam Kennedy threw his only touchdown pass of the night, a 55-yard strike to Allen Muse to open the scoring in the first quarter. David Oku added to the lead with a two-yard touchdown run, but A-State missed the conversion, and Troy (2-1) quickly marched down for its first touchdown on a 1-yard Jordan Chunn run.

Oku’s second TD run made it 20-7, but the second quarter belonged to the Trojans. Deon Anthony’s 2-yard run and Corey Robinson’s short toss to Eric Thomas moved the Trojans ahead 21-20 at halftime.

A-State answered the proverbial bell in the second half and Gordon ran 11 yards for a go-ahead score. Troy answered when Robinson threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Holmes, but Gordon struck back with a 64-yard scoring dash to make it 34-28.

Anthony threw a touchdown pass for 53 yards to tie the game at 34, but the Trojans missed the conversion. Fredi Knighten rushed 13 yards for the winning score with 3:56 left.

For Arkansas State, Kennedy completed 20 of 34 passes for 282 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions, and Oku had 74 yards on 21 carries for the Red Wolves. Qushaun Lee led the Wolves’ defense with 12 tackles.
