BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Ninfa Barnard of Arkansas-Pine Bluff won two more SWAC indoor championships Sunday and earned the Top Female Runner honor at the conference meet.
Coming off her conference-record run in the 3,000 meters, the senior won the 800 meters in another SWAC-record 2 minutes, 13.23 seconds, and won the mile run in 5:05.91. She scored 30 of the Lady Lions’ 54 points, helping the team finish fourth in team standings.
“Ninfa did an outstanding job for us,” UAPB coach Christopher McCoy said in a press release. “The two records she broke were held by former UAPB athletes. She’ll also do well during the outdoor season.”
The 800 record was previously set by Alicia Johnson (2:13.95 last year). The 3,000 record came down Saturday after Vasity Chemweno held it for five years.
Alabama State won its fourth straight SWAC women’s team title with 218 points.
The UAPB men’s team settled for eighth with 17 points. Prairie View A&M won the men’s title with 132 points.
“On both sides, I think we did pretty good, compared to last year,” McCoy said. “We’re making strides because we placed in area that we didn’t score any points in last year. I can see us getting to a point where we can win championships.”
