Making a case for a second black on court

Editor, The Commercial:

A second term for the president deserves a second black Supreme Court Justice.

The presidential election is over and President Barack Obama has won re-election. This was a history maker, a black man re-elected president of these United States. A second Supreme Court Justice should be the “civil rights movement” of this generation.

A second black on the U.S. Supreme Court is a reasonable thing to ask after having a quota of “one” since the appointment of the late Justice Thurgood Marshall. Now is the time for black and white leadership to begin a dialogue concerning the number of blacks on the Supreme Court.

Black and white leadership should be encouraged to place this suggestion on the table for consideration.
