Pine Bluff lost a good man last week when Ernie Clement left this world. For almost two hours, people stood, waiting in lines snaking down the sidewalk to pay tribute to this local business owner. His Exxon station on Harding was his starting place, and after years there he moved over to Walnut Street, and his loyal customers followed him.
You could tell what kind of man Ernie was by looking at the people that came to say good-bye. He did not care about the color of your skin or how much money you had. They all came to say good-bye — some in suits and some with the grease still on their clothes from an honest days work.
Ernie would have been amazed at the love that these people showed his family. It just goes to show you that you do not have to be rich to have a big send off — just an honest, hardworking, humble man who showed everyone respect and earned their trust and respect in turn. We will miss you Ernie!
