Ruthie Hartley

On May 15, 1956 in Pine Bluff, Ark., Mr. Searcy and Mrs. Ardella Hughes welcomed into this world their 9th child, Ruthie Lee Hughes.

Ruthie Lee completed her education in Pine Bluff, Ark., attending 34th St. Elementary School, Southeast Junior High School, and Pine Bluff Senior High School. Having a passion for learning, she continued her education in her later years at the Long Beach City College in Long Beach, Calif.

Ruthie was truly a child of God. Excited about Christ, she dedicated her life to Him at the age of 11 and was baptized at Lampkin Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. She remained zealous for Christ throughout her life. Upon moving to California in 1974 she found a new church home, International Full Gospel Church in Compton. She also attended True Love Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles. She later became a member of Christ Second Baptist in Long Beach, where she remained a faithful member until her death. She was an Evangelist, a Mother of the Church, and a choir member. Ruthie’s love for Christ was very apparent. She would witness to anyone she came in contact with even if someone called her with the wrong number.

Ruthie’s heart was very big, giving her last was not uncommon. She would rather go without than to see someone else struggle. She could always find the good in people even those who wronged her. She was a woman of peace.

Ruthie can be described as a true entertainer. There was never a dull moment when she was around. Even in her last days she always made sure you went away with a story and a laugh. She would sing to you, tell you a story, or even a joke but whatever it was it was sure to put a smile on your face. Ruthie enjoyed music and singing. If she wasn’t singing, she would ask someone to sing a song for her. She was a woman who enjoyed reading her Word. Her favorite scripture was Proverbs 3:5-6.

On December 8, 2012, the Lord called his daughter, Ruthie Lee Hughes, home. Preceding her in death are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Searcy Hughes and Great niece Mireya McCall. She leaves behind her husband of 25 years, George Hartley.
