Rev. Earl Shorter


DETROIT, Mich. — Funeral services for Rev. Earl Carl Shorter, 57, of Detroit, Mich., formerly of Pine Bluff, died July 10, will be held Thursday 11 a.m. Kings Highway MBC Rev. Walter May pastor, Rev. Carl Curry of Detroit officiating.

Rev. Carl was born July 20, 1954 in Pine Bluff, son of Curlee and Earline Shorter.

After attending Dollarway High School he worked for Mayflower Trucking Company for many years, even owning his own 18 wheeler. Later he moved to Milwaukee, Wis., and finally to Detroit, Mich., where he followed his true trade as a master mechanic and continued in that profession until his health failed. He could repair anything from appliances to the most complex automobiles. One of his greatest pleasures was to repair a challenging auto that others said could not be fixed.

He professed his calling into the ministry at the age of 16 and preached in Pine Bluff, Milwaukee, and Detroit.

He met Audrey 30 years ago and together they have a son Diaz Stewart. He helped raise her three other children, James Jr., Antoinette, Martese Stewart. He was preceded in death by his grandparent, sister, Carolyn Jean Shorter Bennett.

Survivors: Friend 30 years, Audrey Stewart; parents, Curlee and Earline Shorter; son, Diaz Stewart; six brothers, Curlee Shorter Sr., Pine Bluff, Walter J. Shorter, William J. Shorter both of Gulf Port, Miss., Leon U.(Lavenia) Shorter, Milwaukee, Wis., Curtis J. Shorter Sr., of Garland, Texas, Nathaniel Shorter of Tacoma, Wash.; four sisters, Corlis(Herbert) Fitzpatrick of Red Oak, Texas, Jacqueline R. Blackwell, Ella J. Evans, Stephanie L. Shorter all of Pine Bluff; his trusted shadow and grandson, Deairis Ware Stewart; one uncle, Robert Shorter of Pine Bluff; one aunt, Ruby Shorter of Pine Bluff, nieces, nephews.

Visitation may be made Wednesday 6-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery by Perry Funeral Home.
