WHITE HALL — Lester “Glen” Welch, 76, of White Hall, passed away Friday, April 27, 2012, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Welch was born December 20, 1935, in Pine Bluff, a son of the late Bernie Welch, Sr. and Rosie Brown Welch. He was reared and received his education in Pine Bluff attending Watson Chapel schools. He joined the United States Army, serving in the 101st Airborne Division during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Welch married Helen Janice Stegall on March 10, 1979, in Pine Bluff. They spent thirty years together, until her death in 2009.
Mr. Welch was employed by Safeway Grocery Stores for many years, retiring in the mid- 1990s, as a stocking supervisor. He was also the owner and operator of Welch’s Gas Station on East Harding in Pine Bluff for many years. During his retirement, he and his wife ran a local Flea Market. He was a member of Summit Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Janice Welch, two sons, Rick and Donnie Welch, and two brothers, Bernie Welch, Jr. and Lee Welch and one sister, Maxine Welch.
Mr. Welch is survived by his son, Mark Welch of Covington, Ga.; two stepsons, Joe Freyer of Rison and Mike Freyer, of Springfield, Mo.; 13 grandchildren, Kristen Remington, Lauren Reese, Lisa Welch, Ricky Welch, Tim Welch, Aaron Welch, Brandon Welch, Keith Freyer, Joey Freyer, Jeremy Freyer, April Guenther, Jan Bamburg, and Mike Sherwood; 14 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Shirley Kiefer of Denver, Colo., and Pat Brallier of Rogersville, Mo.
The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6-8 p.m., at Robinson’s. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 1, 2012, in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson and Son with Reverend Tom Hart officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
