GARLAND, Texas — Mrs. Hember Emma Stewart, 99, of Garland, Texas, formerly of Pine Bluff, was born May 1, 1912 and departed this life March 29, 2012 at the Lindan Park Nursing Home in Richardson, Texas.
The oldest of seven children was born in Jefferson County to the late King and Julia James Sims. She was reared and attended Merrill School in Pine Bluff, was a seamstress and worked for Mrs Betty Abbott.
She united in holy matrimony to the late William Jasper Stewart.
She confessed a hope in Christ at an early age and later became a longtime member of Damascus Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorage of the late Rev. J.H. Smith and the late Rev. John H. Nolen.
She was a member of the mission ministry.
She remained a member under the leadership of Pastor La Vara Henry until she moved to Garland, Texas under the care of her children.
Her hobbies were growing flowers, embroidering, quilting and gardening. She also loved cooking, good housekeeping, and being with her grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were one brother, King Sims, Jr., and four sisters, Bernice, Ann, Eula Mae, and Rosie Lee.
Blessed with cherished memories are one sister, Mrs. Sadie Sims Harris of Pine Bluff; one daughter, Mrs. Marietta Rayson of Garland,Texas; one step daughter, Mrs. Berdine Greenwood of Pine Bluff; one grand-daughter, Mrs. Karen (Kenneth) Smith Jackson of Garland, Texas; seven great grandchildren, Kevin, Nicholas, David, Eryc, Christopher, Jonathan and Michael of Texas; three great-great-grandchildren, Zoe, Paige, and Kevon of Garland, Texas. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 7, 2012 at the Damascus Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. LaVara Henry officiating. Interment will be at the Graceland Cemetery with services entrusted to the P.K. Miler Mortuary.
Visitation is from 6-8 p.m. , Friday, at the Mortuary.
Mrs. Stewart will lie in repose at the church from 10 a.m., Saturday, April 7, 2012 until the time of service.
