Michael David Hurst, 63, of Pine Bluff, died Monday, October 8, 2012.
He was born September 4, 1949 in Clarendon, Ark., son of Rufus and Jimmie Lee Hood Hurst.
Mr. Hurst was reared and received his early education in Pine Bluff, graduating from Pine Bluff High School.
After high school, Michael worked for the FBI in technical support and communications. While at the FBI, he took part in the Point Pleasant Ridge investigation. He began working for the Jefferson County Sheriff Department in 1970, where he implemented the 911 communications system, served as administrator of the Jack Jones Juvenile Detention Center, served as chief deputy and helped with construction of the Dub Brassell Adult Detention Center and served as a deputy coroner. Mr. Hurst also worked for Carlton-Bates Company for 20 years as a electronics distributor. He also did many legal special projects for Jefferson County and the Sheriff’s Department.
Michael had a love for teaching. He has taught at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Southeast Arkansas College and Law Enforcement Training Academy for over 20 years.
Mr. Hurst loved learning. After taking classes at Pines Vocational School and the Institute of Applied Science, he earned his BA in criminal justice from the University of Arkansas in 1985. He earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Arkansas in 1990 and became a certified legal instructor in 1991. Michael earned his PhD in criminal justice from St. John’s University in 2003.
Michael accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior in 1991. He loved the praise and worship atmosphere of First Assembly of God and hosted many praise and worship events, as well as Bible Study, in his home. Mr. Hurst wrote a book, “Second Chance” outlining his salvation experiences.
Mr. Hurst was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Jennifer; three sons, Jimmy, Jason and Justin; five grandchildren, Zachary, Alex, Bradley, C.J. and Daniel; one great-grandchild, Dalton; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Calvin and Nell.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 11, 2012 at First Assembly of God with Reverend Gary Bell officiating. Burial will follow at Griffin-Leggett Forest Hills Cemetery in Alexander, Ark.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday evening at Robinson’s.
