NORTH LITTLE ROCK — Mr. Lawrence D. (L.D.) Greene, Jr., 89, of North Little Rock, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born Dec. 26, 1923, in Lamont, Ark. to Lawrence D., Sr., and Thelma Woodfield Greene. He was preceded in death by both of his parents as well as his sister, Ida Nell Ingram.
While serving in the Army during World War II, he received the following medals: Combat Infantry-man Badge, two Bronze Service Stars, Purple Heart, World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal, among others. He served in Northern France and Rhineland Campaigns and was wounded during a battle in the Huertgen Forest, Germany in Nov., 1944. After a year’s stay in various hospitals and separation from the Army, L.D. married the love of his life, Mary L. Childress, on Feb. 19, 1946. They have three children: Larry W. Green (Betty) of Pine Bluff; Steve C. Greene (Vivienne) of Macon; and Mary Nell McCammon (Steve) of Redfield. He was a beloved husband and caring dad. He was a grandpa or papaw to nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He enjoyed camping, traveling and listening to gospel music. He was educated at Watson Chapel in Pine Bluff and was owner/operator of Oakland Park Kiddieland for 15 years. He was affiliated with First Assembly of God in North Little Rock and most recently a member of Brockington Road Nazarene Church. L.D. and Mary raised their children in the Church of the Nazarene in Pine Bluff where he served as Sunday School Superintendent and music director.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, at Griffin Leggett Rest Hills Funeral Home, 7724 Landers Road, North Little Rock - (501) 835-3515. A celebration of his life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday in the Chapel, with his grandson, Larry Wayne Greene, Jr., and the Rev. George Prentice officiating.
