Harry L. Cross was born to the late Harry and Rosa Carter Cross on December 3, 1918 in Camden, Ark. He departed this life on July 17, 2013.
An honor graduate, co-valedictorian, of Camden High School in 1937, he earned an AB degree in Social Services from Arkansas AM&N College (University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff). His graduate degrees included a degree from Madison, Wisconsin Business College; an MS degree in Education Administration from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1953; and a Master’s in Education degree in Financial Administration from the University of Denver in 1957.
In 1949, he was united in holy matrimony with Mildred L. Fancher.
During his four years of service in World War II, he served in the Quartermasters Corp in the European and the Pacific Theaters of Operation. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain.
In 1942 and again in 1946-47, he taught the fifth grade in the Camden School System. From 1949 until his retirement in 1983, he was employed at Arkansas AM&N College in the following capacities: accounts receivable clerk, internal auditor, chief accountant and adjunct instructor of accounting.
Mr. Cross was a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated and was awarded a plaque by Delta Sigma Lambda Chapter for service rendered as treasurer from 1951-1974. A member of St. John AME church, he served as a steward, a class leader, a member of the Finance Committee, and church treasurer.
On April 27, 2012, the auditorium in Caldwell Hall at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff was named in honor of Mr. Cross, former Chief Accountant and Della Phipps, former registrar.
He leaves to cherish his home-going a loving and devoted wife of 63 years, Mildred; four nieces, Mrs. Rosemary (Robert Lee) Davis of Camden, Ark., Mrs. Mona L. Mallory and Rev. Dr. Jennifer (Rev. Dr. Silas) Johnson of Little Rock, and Mrs. Christine Cross of Memphis, Tenn.; three nephews, Randolph (Peritha) Hegwood of Little Rock, Ark., Chester S. (Linda) Cross of Maryland, Paxton (Shirley) Hegwood of Camden, Ark., and other relatives and friends.
Funeral Service will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at St. John A.M.E. Church by Rev. W.R. Norful, Sr. Burial will be in Bellwood Cemetery by Brown Funeral Home of Pine Bluff.
Visitation will be Monday from 4-6 p.m. with a Family Hour from 6-7 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home.
The body will lie in state at the church Tuesday from 10:15 a.m. until service time.
