George Batzos


George David Batzos, age 81, of Pine Bluff, went home to be with our Lord and Savior, Tuesday, September 3, 2013. Born June 24, 1932, in Pine Bluff, Ark., he was the son of the late James and Mary Fakouri Batzos and was preceded in death by his youngest daughter Jamie Suzanne and son George David Jr.

He attended Annunciation Academy, (St. Joseph) , graduated from Pine Bluff High School class of 1949, attended State Teachers College( UCA) and University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, serving as a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity.

He was a very dedicated loving Father and husband. His love for his family and dedication to serve were truly his legacy. The Batzos family owned and operated State Fruit Company Café, and Third and State Liquor store. They became a thriving business in downtown Pine Bluff for 81 years, with Mr. Batzos working alongside his parents for many years. In addition to his family business, he owned George D. Distributing Company, 7-11 liquor store, JB Builders contracting and property management company. He served in the army during the Korean conflict. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW and a lifetime member of the Pine Bluff Chamber of Commerce. He was a very devout Catholic member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, serving various positions throughout his life as an altar boy, Eucharistic minister, Lecture, and altar server. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, serving as a 3rd and 4th degree Knight of Columbus and as a Grand Knight. For 25 years, he graciously chaired St. Josephs annual Spaghetti Supper, delighting in serving so many throughout the community.

He is survived by his loving wife; Sue Roupe Batzos, married on April 1, 1953, the marriage was a “beautiful journey” that lasted 62 years. He was a loving father of four daughters and their families. Mary Cook (Joe) of Conway, Anna Batzos of Little Rock, Vala Harbison of Austin, Texas and Sofia (Eric) Edwards of Pine Bluff. Twelve grandchildren; James David and Stephen Gilliam, Caitlyn and Mary Katherine Cook, Rachel Lindsey, Natalie, Paul, Tara and Christina Harbison, (father, Doug Harbison) and Christopher George, Ryan and Brianna Edwards and one great-grandchild, Kyleigh Edwards. A Vigil service will be held 5 p.m., Sunday, September 8, 2013, at Ralph Robinson Funeral Home, with Deacon Noel F. Bryant officiating. A visitation will follow.

Funeral Mass will be 2 p.m., Monday, September 9, 2013, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Monsignor John F. O’Donnell and Father L. Warren Harvey officiating.

Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery. St. Joseph Catholic Church is located at, 412 West 6th, Pine Bluff, Ark.
