Eugene “Gene” Huckaby, age 83, of Pine Bluff, died Sunday, July 15, 2012.
Mr. Huckaby, or “Gene,” as most people knew him, was born on January 20, 1929, at Spring (Lincoln County), to the late Martin Huckaby and Syble Heflin Huckaby. He was the youngest of 13 children. Raised by his father and devoted siblings, Gene was educated at home early on and, then, by family friends.
Gene worked throughout the Pine Bluff area and, later, opened a restaurant, Pic-Nic-Ker Burgers, which became well known in Southeast Arkansas for its food and hospitality. He was deeply committed to Dollarway, particularly to its schools. Gene was forced to retire after several health setbacks. A devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Pine Bluff, he was active there until he required full-time care at Davis Life Care Center.
Gene is survived by one daughter, Victoria Huckaby Reid (Michael Reid) of White Hall; two grandchildren, Kathryn Reid Golden (Shane Golden) of White Hall and Jonathan Reid of Madison, Wis.; and two great grandchildren, Wilson and Wyatt Golden. He also leaves behind many other family members and friends.
The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Thursday, 10:30 a.m. with Father Warren Harvey and Deacon Noel F. “Bud” Bryant officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery by Fuller Hale-South Funeral Services
There will be a vigil service on Wednesday, 6:30 p.m.; visitation will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Fuller Hale-South Chapel.
