Mr. Charles N. Bates, 80, of Pine Bluff, died Saturday, December 8, 2012 at home.
He was born November 15, 1932 in Sherrill, son of Sam O. and Nelle Mashburn Bates.
Mr. Bates was reared and received his early education in Sherrill.
He served in the United States Army, stationed in Germany.
Mr. Bates worked for Pine Bluff Butane Company, Pine Bluff Crate and Pallett and Jefferson Electric. He also worked for Jefferson Bolts and Nuts before purchasing the business and changing the name to Poor Folks Bolts and Nuts.
He was a member of Salem Missionary Baptist Church.
Mr. Bates was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Boyt Bates, whom he married May 29, 1956 in Colorado Springs, Colo.; his parents; two sisters, Ann Sisk and Lola Chadick; and four brothers, Jack, DO, Sam and Monk Bates.
Survivors include his daughter, Virginia Harris and her husband, Stan of Idabel, Okla.; sister, Bobbye Posey of Bossier City, La.; brother, John Bates of Pine Bluff; three grandchildren, Kerrie Bieber and husband, Perry, Jr. of Savannah, Georgia, Kevin Harris and wife, Jamie of Owasso, Okla. and Kyle Harris and wife, Ita of Carrollton, Texas; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 10, 2012 in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors with Reverend Billy Burks officiating. Burial will follow in Bellwood Annex Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. Sunday evening at Robinson’s.
